2015 Dayton Chess Festival

The Dayton Chess Festival opened today in Dayton, OH, at the Dayton Chess Club.

There are three FIDE rated round-robin events taking place. The Dayton Masters features ten players, all holding at least the FM title:

  • IM John Bartholomew (USA)
  • IM Calvin Blocker (USA)
  • GM Dejan Bojkov (BUL)
  • FM Carl Boor (USA)
  • GM Vladimir Georgiev (MKD)
  • FM Ruifeng Li (USA)
  • IM Farai Mandizha (ZIM)
  • GM Giorgi Margvelashvili (GEO)
  • GM Nikola Mitkov (MKD)
  • IM Jeffery Xiong (USA)

Dayton Futurity “A” is a 10-player RR that has all masters or experts. FM Akshi.ta Gorti, NM Davis Whaley (Kentucky state champion), and NM Will Sedlar (Dayton Chess Club champion) are among the participants.

Dayton Futurity “B” is a 9-player RR that has a number of up-and-coming young players, mostly Ohioans. The top seeds there are the brother/sister duo of Abhinay and Aasa Dommalapati.

The Dayton Masters will be broadcast live on chess.com (there was a computer crash this morning that is delaying transmission of round 1, but I’m told that will be fixed shortly). The time control is 40/90+30i, SD/30+30i.

As time permits, I’ll try to update standings here each round. There are pictures being taken (albeit by an extremely amateur photographer).

(EDIT: Forgot about the autocensor on FM Gorti’s given name.)

The Dayton Masters broadcast will be at http://www.chess.com/tv. There appears to be a transmission there now.

Thanks for alerting us to this event, Mr. Reed. I stopped by the Dayton Chess Club while in town on business back in May and played in their weekly G/24 d5 event. It’s well worth the visit and an excellent facility for a city of any size.

Results of Dayton Masters, Round 1:

Georgiev 1 - 0 Bartholomew
Mandizha 1 - 0 Blocker
Bojkov 1/2 - 1/2 Li
Mitkov 1/2 - 1/2 Boor
Xiong 1 - 0 Margvelashvili

It appears that the previous technical issues with transmission should be resolved for the start of Round 2. (At least, the DGT units all appear to be working now…we’ll see if that’s still the case after play resumes.)

Results of Dayton Masters, round 2:

Bartholomew 0 - 1 Margvelashvili
Boor 0 - 1 Xiong
Li 1/2 -1/2 Mitkov
Blocker 1 - 0 Bojkov
Georgiev 1 - 0 Mandizha

Leaders after 2 rounds: V. Georgiev & J. Xiong, 2/2

Round 3, 11am tomorrow…

Results of Dayton Masters, round 3:

Bojkov 1/2 - 1/2 Georgiev
Mandizha 1/2 - 1/2 Bartholomew
Mitkov 1/2 - 1/2 Blocker
Xiong 1/2 - 1/2 Li
Margvelashvili 1 - 0 Boor

Leaders after 3 rounds: V. Georgiev & J. Xiong, 2.5-0.5; G. Margvelashvili, 2-1

Round 4, 6pm tonight…

Results of Dayton Masters, round 4:

Georgiev 1/2 - 1/2 Mitkov
Li 1/2 - 1/2 Margvelashvili
Blocker 1/2 - 1/2 Xiong
Bartholomew 1 - 0 Boor
Mandizha 1/2 - 1/2 Bojkov

Leaders after 4 rounds: V. Georgiev & J. Xiong, 3-1; G. Margvelashvili, 2.5-1.5

Dayton Futurity “A”

Leaders after 4 rounds: D. Whaley, 3.5-0-5; 5 players, 2.5-1.5

Dayton Futurity “B”

Leaders after 4 rounds: Aa. Dommalapati, 4-0; Ab. Dommalapati & J. Storn, 3.5-0.5

Notes:

The Dayton Masters is a Category 8 tournament (average rating 2442.1).

FM Li has reasonable IM norm chances. He’s already played three of the four GMs, plus IM Xiong, and has drawn all four games. He needs to finish +1 (5 points) for an IM norm. All norm-seekers except IM Xiong (who should not need a norm from this event to earn his GM title) need 6.5 points for a GM norm. If anyone else gets within reasonable distance of a norm, I’ll report it here.

Round 5, 11am tomorrow…

Results of Dayton Masters, round 5:

Xiong 1 - 0 Georgiev
Mitkov 1/2 - 1/2 Mandizha
Bojkov 1 - 0 Bartholomew
Margvelashvili 1 - 0 Blocker
Boor 0 - 1 Li

Leaders after 5 rounds: J. Xiong, 4-1; G. Margvelashvili, 3.5-1.5.

Dayton Futurity “A”

Leaders after 5 rounds: D. Whaley, 4-1; W. Griggs & N. Keating-Adams, 3.5-1.5

Dayton Futurity “B”

Leaders after 5 rounds: Aa. Dommalapati, 5-0; Ab. Dommalapati, 4.5-0.5

Notes:

Xiong remains on track for a “bonus” GM norm by beating the erstwhile co-leader. He needs to finish +2 in the last 4 rounds.

Li is now firmly in line for an IM norm after his first win. 50% over the last 4 rounds will do the trick, and he’s been very solid thus far, not losing a game. He is still mathematically alive for a GM norm, but he’ll need to finish +3 in the last 4 rounds.

Round 6, 6pm tonight…

A few games from the event so far. (Don’t get used to this…I can’t guarantee I’ll have time to post more game scores. These are just a few I found interesting, and thought I’d share.)

Dayton Futurity “B”

Leaders after 6 rounds: Aa. Dommalapati & Ab. Dommalapati, 6.5-0.5

Notes:

FM Li now requires just a 0.5/2 finish for an IM norm. He and IM Xiong could each still score 2/2 for a GM norm.

The Dayton Chess Club’s Facebook page has a gallery of pictures, and their website has standings updated after each round.

Round 8, 6pm tonight…

GO DAVIS!!!

The eighth round is still in progress, but there is news to report.

FM Ruifeng Li has drawn his game as black against GM Vladimir Georgiev. This should secure his third IM norm with a round to spare. Having previously achieved the necessary FIDE rating, Li appears to have satisfied the requirements for the IM title.

Results of Dayton Masters, round 8:

Georgiev 1/2 - 1/2 Li
Bartholomew 1 - 0 Blocker
Mandizha 1 - 0 Boor
Bojkov 1/2 - 1/2 Margvelashvili
Mitkov 1/2 - 1/2 Xiong

Leaders after 8 rounds: G. Margvelashvili & J. Xiong, 5.5-2.5; V. Georgiev & R. Li, 5-3

Dayton Futurity “A”

Leaders after 8 rounds: D. Whaley, 6.5-1.5; W. Sedlar, 6-2

Dayton Futurity “B”

Leaders after 8 rounds: Ab. Dommalapati, 7.5-0.5; Aa. Dommalapati, 6.5-1.5

Notes:

IM Xiong and FM Li continue to be the only players in the Masters who have not yet suffered a loss.

Tomorrow’s update may be somewhat truncated, if not omitted entirely. (I’m not even staying for the closing ceremony, as I have to drive back to Pittsburgh, unpack, repack, and catch a 7am flight to Phoenix the next morning.) Final information should be available through the Dayton Chess Club’s website and Facebook page.

Round 9 (last round), 11am tomorrow…

Results of Dayton Masters, round 9:

Blocker 0 - 1 Georgiev
Margvelashvili 1/2 - 1/2 Mitkov
Boor 1/2 - 1/2 Bojkov
Li 1 - 0 Mandizha
Xiong 1/2 - 1/2 Bartholomew

Winners: V. Georgiev, G. Margvelashvili, J. Xiong, R. Li, 6-3

Dayton Futurity “A”

Winners: D. Whaley, 7.5-1.5; W. Sedlar, 7-2

Dayton Futurity “B”

Winners: Ab. Dommalapati, 8-1; Aa. Dommalapati, 7-2

Notes:

By winning his last game, Ruifeng Li tied for first place, a half-point shy of a GM norm.

Final information should be available through the Dayton Chess Club’s website and Facebook page.

Thanks for the reporting, Boyd. I wish I could have been there to play in one of the futurities. Sigh. Once again the Dayton Chess Club adds to its luster as one of the best chess clubs in the US.
