Bisguier's 10 Tips

Quick question for the institutional memory here:

  1. Was Bisguier’s 10 Tips to Winning Chess mailed out with new memberships / renewals? Or was it a rules sheet with his name / face on it?

  2. Is there a pdf version of the 10 Tips somewhere on the website? I found the html version, but a hoarder like me only wants the pdf.

Thanks.

That comprised Chapter 17 of the 4th edition of USCF’s Official Rules of Chess. The chapter consisted of 16 pages, including lots of diagrams. It was not included in versions thereafter.

This was a small 16-page pamphlet. I still have a few copies. I don’t remember whether it was sent out with renewals but I know you could request copies from the office to hand out. I used to do that for our scholastic events. Another common handout available from the office was “Profiles of the World Champions” by Andy Soltis; a 24 page pamphlet covering all the Champions through Kasparov. I have a couple of copies of that on my shelf too.

I don’t know. I did not find one when I looked just now.

True story: shortly after GM Bisguier’s death, I dreamt that there was a rap version of the Ten Tips, à la the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ten Crack Commandments.

I blame Hamilton.

Here is how you can create your own pdf version:

  1. Go to http://www.uschess.org/content/view/9111/28/

  2. Copy the 10 Tips.

  3. Paste them into a Word document (or another word processor).

  4. Save as a pdf file (or any word processing file).

And the current 10 Tips HTML posting on the US Chess site (above) has an icon for e-mailing the document (or link?). I tried it this AM and so far (over an hour later) I have received no such e-mail. There is also an icon for printing. I did not try it.

The office used to have this as a small pamphlet, I don’t know if it has been reprinted since the move to TN, much less updated for rebranding to US Chess.

Dan Lucas would be the person to ask.

Thanks all. This is helpful.

Still trying to confirm whether the pamphlet was mailed out as part of new memberships / renewals. Can anyone shed light?
