In Fischer’s case, I think one can separate the lifework from the life without denying or covering up certain biographical facts. Is Fischer’s probable mental illness a convenient excuse for an attempt to salvage his legacy? Perhaps. But not everything that is ideologically convenient is fake news. Me? I’m [willing to help organize this event](http://www.chichess.org/events/2018/03/10/ccc-bobby-fischer-memorial). But I’m not inclined to underwrite Fischer statues even as certain Confederate statues come down, and I’ll bet most of you aren’t, either. ---
