Here are two extreme responses to a similar situation. In Fischer’s case, I think one can separate the lifework from the life without denying or covering up certain biographical facts.
Is Fischer’s probable mental illness a convenient excuse for an attempt to salvage his legacy? Perhaps. But not everything that is ideologically convenient is fake news.
Me? I’m willing to help organize this event. But I’m not inclined to underwrite Fischer statues even as certain Confederate statues come down, and I’ll bet most of you aren’t, either.
