Berry would be the obvious choice, but since I don’t think you’d have posed this challenge if the answer were that easy I’ll rule him out. We can rule out Goichberg and Polgar because their ratings would not have been that low, and we can rule out Channing because his rating would not have been that high. That leaves Paul and the two Randy’s. With a little research I could find when Paul arrived in the US, but that’s too much work. Bauer was 2100-ish when the MSA started and played in events in Kansas, so him playing in OK a few years earlier with a lower rating is plausible. Hough’s rating is right, but I don’t think he ventured out of CA much. So it’s between Randy B and Paul. I’ve got a 50-50 shot. I guess Bauer.

Very good deduction Mulfish. Randy Bauer actually went to college in Oklahoma. And played many events. He actually had a tournament that he tied for 1st, over coming 2 Masters.
In 1986 &87 Randy was very active in tournaments. He did several analyses of his best games for The Oklahoma Chess Bulletin.

Here is a good Chess Trivia, In the 2001 National Open in Las Vegas. Two GMs gave Simuls. Gm. A Baburin (2670) and GM Bu Xaingzhi (2608) Two Brothers played in the Simuls.

Brother 1 (1685) vs GM A Baburin ( 2670) 1-0 His win was the only loss or tie by the GM.

GM Bu Xaingzhi (2608 ) Vs Brother 2 ( 2000) 1/2- 1/2
The only draw, with no loses by the GM.

Who were these Brothers? What are they doing now?

This one is devilish, and too tough for me. I tried looking up the tournament on the MSA, but I couldn’t find anyone rated 1685. There are of course lots of people rated 2000, including Don Schultz, but I was too lazy to look for last names and see if any of them have brothers who play chess.

Oh come on Harry! Every time I see this guy he’s always showing me how he crushed Baburin (the reality is he got lucky) and how he wants to hook everyone with the Fishing Pole. I believe I have a picture clue that includes you too!

Well Chris, your comment was enough for me to figure it out. But I’ll not spoil anyone else’s fun.

Chris, and Mulfish,
I believe you have them  Chris, anytime you beat a GM rated 990 points higher than you it is a crushing experience   . And you can be sure someone got lucky.
Anyone else know these brothers and what they are doing now? BTW You are right again Mike, you are just to tough.

Nobody else guessing, or know who these brothers are and what they are doing now?

Did I mention that this entire thread is not a USCF Issue. Therefore Harry, you and everyone else who posted here is going to have to be sanctioned. And with any luck, thrown off any forum moderating committees they are on. :smiling_imp:

I won’t vote to overturn Mulford’s sanction.

Bring the charge, and I will resign. How foolish of me to think chess trivia belonged on a chess issue forum.

You’re not getting off that easy, my friend. Nor am I.

Shucks, the moderators moved this thread out of USCF Issues. Back to work for Harry and me.
