It is some kind of passive radio-based sensor. Various pieces respond at different frequencies.

Thanks, Mike. I located the patent for the system that dgt has licensed. It’s a bit more difficult to insert into a piece than a simple chip. There looks to be an iron core with wire winding to tune it to a specific frequency, as you note. Not quite a do it yourself Winter project…sigh.
