Do TDs Get Credit For Tournaments If Only Monitoring Fair/Safe Play Comments Online?

I was asked to help an online tournament director with monitoring language used during an online tournament. Would an assistant tournament director get US Chess credit for directing a tournament as an assistant if all he would be doing is monitoring fair play and safe play languages during the online tournament?

When I had Fair Play duties during the Pan American Youth in 2024 I was not listed on the tournament report for the main event. I was a floor TD during the blitz and I was listed there.

I know hall monitors who were TDs got listed as ‘other TDs’ at one of the SuperNationals. That seems similar to online room monitors for an online event.

But IMHO the issue isn’t being listed as a TD, it’s whether that counts towards advancement or recertification. There I have my doubts.

it only depends on how it is listed on the rating repot, right

In theory one could hold a 75 player event and use 10 TDs in various capacities, but would it be fair for all of them to get credit for a Category D event?

The question of whether it is ethical to list someone as a TD on a rating report who wasn’t technically doing TD work is what really matters here. However, if you’re listed as a TD in any capacity, the office will not know what your duties were limited to, just that you were a TD in some capacity.

In the TD Certification Rules, online events can be used to substitute experience requirements for upgrading to every level from Local to NTD. In all cases, it states “…as a TD at an online Swiss tournament, or section of a tournament…” which means it doesn’t have to be Chief, Asst. Chief, etc. and doesn’t define what capacity the TD needed to work the event in.

Local, 26 b4 “Satisfactory performance as a TD at an online Swiss tournament, or section of a tournament, of at least three rounds can be used as a single one-time substitution for a requirement (a3) category C tournament.”

Senior 30 b9 “Satisfactory performance as a TD at an online Swiss tournament, or section of a tournament, of at least four rounds and having at least 50 entrants, can be used as a single one-time substitute for a requirement (a3) category C requirement. This type of TD credit can be used as a substitute no more than twice, replacing nor more than two of the four a3 category C requirements. If it is used twice then two different online events must be used.”

ANTD 34 b3 “One TD experience credit can be with the satisfactory performance as a TD at an online Swiss tournament, or section of a tournament, of at least four rounds and having at least 100 entrants. This single type of TD credit can be used as a substitute no more than twice, replacing no more than two of the three a4 category B requirements. If it is used twice then two different online events must be used.”

NTD 38 b3 “One TD experience credit can be earned with the satisfactory performance as a TD at an online Swiss tournament, or section of a tournament, of at least four rounds and having at least 100 entrants. This single type of TD credit can be used as a substitute no more than twice, replacing no more than two of the four a4 category B requirements. If it is used twice then two different online events must be used.”

I’m not sure the certification requirements have kept up with our staffing needs. For example, monitoring for Safe Play violations is clearly a TD activity, though it might not involve any pairing or floor ruling tasks.

A while back I floated a list of possible expanded TD duties, the new MUIR system should have the ability to add additional duties relatively easily. But TDCC would still have to decide which tournament responsibilities get credit towards what.
