ps - Newsletter preview with pgn (for board diagram and video see The Newsletter):

This week’s game comes from my list of upset victories. I have published most of my upset wins so that I am only left with upsets over Jeff Fox and Buck Buchanan. I have about 10 of them as it took me a long time to catch those guys. This one is the first time I beat NM Buck Buchanan.

Buck cracked the master level, got his certificate, and quickly dropped back to 2100 before I had ever played him. By the time I beat him for the first time he was at 2013. It it funny that seven years later, the last time I beat him, he was rated 2013 as well. In the meantime, I went up from 1770 to 1897.

In this position, the material and position is fairly even. I have only two pawn islands compared to his three, and he does have doubled pawns. These things seem like they will give me the advantage in the endgame. However, he does have the more mobile minor piece. Fortunately, I find the tactic of Removal Of The Guard to break into his position and push on to the win…
