Filatov Alleges Kasparov Is coaching the US Olympiad Team

Look like a new Cold War is beginning…

I think the leadership of our Olympiad teams has been publicly announced for some time…

Looks like typical trash talk and hype before a sporting event to amp up the crowd of online viewers. If the US and Russia get too caught up in the nonsense of a “Cold War” again, they will miss how fast China is continuing to improve. China’s team has more experience working together than both of the other “superpowers”.

None of the US players have styles comparable to Kasparov, except perhaps Nakamura. We will see if the US team really is the best team money can buy.

LOL! Quite right.

Our chances will probably depend in significant degree on how well our fourth board (Robson/Shankland) does against the higher rated players they will face from China and Russia.

What we really need to do is convince Rex to pony up enough money to convince Carlsen to move here. I’m serious. Magnus has won everything in chess that there is to win except a gold medal at the Olympiad. He’s never going to get that with Norway. It might be worth a try. Fielding a line-up of Carlsen-Caruana-Nakamura-So I kind of like our chances.

Scott, somewhere in the distant background I hear Herve’ Villechieze chanting “Da Plane! Da Plane!”

Mike, if nobody ever dreamed big dreams we’d still be singing “God save the Queen” as our national anthem.

i’ve always been partial to teams that rely on homegrown talent. as opposed to who can just buy the best team. but to each his own. i think mr robson and mr shankland will perform admirably.

…scot…

Nakamura is home grown. Caruana is a natural born US citizen who grew up here.

thanks, allen. i was mainly alluding to the post about trying to “recruit” mr carlsen.

…scot…

I realize that - just pointing out this year’s team is pretty much all native talent although much of Caruana’s development was in Europe

Right - and So came here on a chess scholarship, won the Millionaire Open and paid his own FIDE transfer fee.

I remember many times when Marc Arnold and Fabiano would both be playing in tournaments at the Marshall Chess Club. I would frequently have them stand back to back, to confirm whether they were still of identical height.

So is an immigrant of choice. Caruana is homegrown and had been playing for Italy as a flag of convenience (nothing wrong with that, as he was a dual citizen at birth). It was reasonable to lure an USA citizen with dual citizenship to play for “home.”

If top GMs choose to come to the USA, great! But if we buy titles, the victories would become hollow.

(Edit: I now see I’m repeating what others have already said…)
