Filatov Proposes WC Changes to Pre-1948 Option.....

…open challenges may be accepted by the WC with the prize fund split 50/50 between the competitors and FIDE. Seems like a nice ride ride for FIDE building up the bank account. Perhaps with the Kirsan sanctions, FIDE is feeling the need for an alternative income flow?

Shouldn’t take long before the elite players start thinking, “Hmmmm, why not give FIDE, oh, maybe five percent or a little less”. With open challenges, who needs Kirsan?

Filatov’s proposal is similar to the “2700 rule” – anyone with a 2700 rating and sponsors promising a $1 million prize fund – can challenge the world champion.
FIDE’s presidential council liked the idea when it was proposed around 2006. So did some of the top players – but not all.
Had Topalov beaten Kramnik, a Radjabov challenge to Topalov was virtually assured.
But Kramnik won the match and the 2700 rule died.
And before you fantasize about the top players cutting FIDE out of the championship, look at the contract that they signed to play in the Candidates Tournament in March. They are barred for years from creating their own world championship.

Carlsen’s new words, during the Wijk Ann Zee tournament are more ominous. It sounds like he’s insisting on a match-only world championship and will go outside FIDE to achieve it.

Reading the article, that does not seem to be what he’s saying. He clearly states that he wants to work withing FIDE, if possible. It’s not clear what he would do if FIDE doesn’t budge. Still, interesting times ahead.
