Don’t you like how in the movies arrogant chess masters are always AMAZED when their opponents employ ordinary tactics like discovered check?
BTW, the game is taken from a book: Réti-Tartakower, Vienna 1910. And it’s listed on Wikipedia’s Checkmates in the opening article. Use the Internet, Moriarty! So what if it’s in the future? You’re a genius! Predict its existence!
That is to say, the game as it must have been played is taken from a book. The game as narrated is nonsensical:
1.P-K4 *P-KB3 (1.e4 *f6)
This has to be …P-QB3 (…c6), a Caro-Kann, otherwise Moriarty blocks the knight move he makes three moves later.
2.P-Q4 P-Q4 (2.d4 d5)
3.N-QB3 PxP (3.Nc3 dxe4)
4.NxP N-KB3 (4.Nxe4 Nf6)
5.Q-Q3 (5.Qd3)
Moriarty: “Hmm. Interesting.” Not really. The only thing interesting about it is that it sets up the trap that the genius Moriarty is about to walk into, and if he knew that, he wouldn’t walk into it. Otherwise, it’s a blah second-best move, the only one Holmes has made so far that doesn’t maintain his advantage . . .
5…P-K4 (5…e5)
. . . which Moriarty gives right back anyway.
6.PxP *Q-K4+ (6.dxe5 *Qe5+)
The only check in this position is …Q-R4+ (…Qa5+).
7.B-Q2 QxKP (7.Bd2 Qxe5)
Said like it’s something diabolical, when it’s the only move that doesn’t lose outright.
8.O-O-O
Moriarty: “Hmm, a little quick, perhaps?” Er, no. Actually, one of only two decent moves in the position; the also-ran is 8.P-KB3 (8.f3).
8…NxN?? (8…Nxe4??)
A lousy move that gives Holmes mate in 3.
Moriarty, gloating: “That is the first major blood for me!”
Holmes, berating: “Some people are blinded by bloodlust, Moriarty!”
Then he sighs, like what he’s about to do hurts him more than it hurts Moriarty.
9.Q-Q8+!! (9.Qd8+!!)
Moriarty, gleefully condescending: “Why, you’ve lost your queen!”
Genius chess masters never employ piece sacrifices. That would be, I don’t know, humble or something.
9…KxQ (9…Kxd8)
10.B-N5+ (10.Bg5+)
Holmes: “Check and discovered check from the queen’s rook.”
Moriarty: “Discovered?” (“Now you’re just making stuff up.”)
Holmes, Smirky McSmirkerton: “You do see?”
Moriarty, irritable evil genius: “Yes, of course I see it!” (“Though a minute ago I didn’t believe such a thing existed.”)
10…K-B2 (10…Kc7)
11.B-Q8++ (11.Bd8#)
Might they re-shoot the scene in algebraic?
Ill make sure I don’t do that in my next caro game
Botvinnik never fell for that trap. He did fall for the Stalin Cult of Personality Trap, but that’s understandable.
