How To Lose Without Resigning

Greetings,

Do you have a hard time resigning a chess game?

This week’s newsletter may be just for you. I wrote an article for the state chess magazine about bitter-enders. I compared different bitter-ender tactics to some of the greatest military last stands in history. Five of the battles have been made into movies, so I checked them out from the library now that they have a chess connection. If you would like some supplemental material while reading the newsletter, here is the list of movies:

  1. The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957
    Best Picture — Sam Spiegel
    Best Director — David Lean
    Best Actor — Alec Guinness
Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium — Michael Wilson, Carl Foreman, Pierre Boulle
Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Film — Malcolm Arnold
Best Film Editing — Peter Taylor
    Best Cinematography — Jack Hildyard
  2. 300, 2007
  3. The Last Samuari, 2003
  4. Patton, 1970
    Best Picture
    Best Director
    Best Original Screenplay
    Best Film Editing
    Best Sound
    Best Art Direction
  5. The Alamo,1960
    Best Sound

Also, I think I messed up the email attachment when I sent Fred the article or he chose not to include it, but I had a picture of the actual game:

  1. Did I just play Boris Gulko?: cschess.webs.com/apps/photos/pho … =129535744

Also, does anyone use the categories feature on the newsletter? Here are all the Tim Brennan stories using that feature:

The categories are by year and special week so far, but let me know if you’d want any others? My losses? People seem to like seeing those for some reason.

Peace be with you,

Paul Anderson
