If you name an event in honor of someone who’s dead, it’s called a “memorial.” What’s it called if you name an event in honor of someone who’s still alive?
What would you call the event if a person’s name wasn’t being attached?
Tim Just’s Winter Open
I asked for that one, didn’t I?
In Honor Of?
Example -
1st Annual CPA’s Open in Honor Of William H. Brock
The Warren Porter Pre Memorial Tournament?!?!?
The “I Wish XXXX Were Dead So We Could Memorialize Him Open”?
xxx Tribute?
xxx Recognition?
xxx Celebration?
Bill Smythe
“Tribute” is good.
I assumed there was some standard term that was eluding me. I guess there isn’t.
In golf they have events like the “Bob Hope Classic” (which he oversaw for many years before his death), but what makes a golf event eligible to be a ‘classic’ is unclear. The USCF does have designations such as ‘Heritage Event’, but a new event wouldn’t be eligible for them.
But if your event would otherwise be the “Stephenson County Open”, you could always call it the “Joe Blow Stephenson County Open”.
I can think of a litigious former USCF member who would probably want this to be a memorial.
Commemorative?
