I just saw a report on Facebook that IM Danny Kopec has passed away. This is sad news but not entirely unexpected, because he’d been suffering from cancer in recent months.
Bill Goichberg’s tribute to Danny Kopec is posted on chesstour.com.
May he R.I.P.
Thanks for posting this. I met him once at a Continental Open in Sturbridge. Nice guy.
Sad. I didn’t know the guy personally but saw him at a lot of tournaments in the northeast, and I remember his name as a rising star in the 70’s when I started playing. He was only a year older than me and it’s very sad (and scary) to see someone die from Pancreatic Cancer at such a young age.
The CCA is still sending out advertising cards for the Continental Open, August 11-14 saying:
“Free lectures by IM Danny Kopec, Saturday 9 am, Sunday 9 am, also analysis in afternoons of games submitted by players.”
The cards were mailed June 9th, three days before Danny’s death. He’d given lectures at the Eastern Class Championships in April, and apparently Bill Goichberg hadn’t heard that Danny’s condition had gotten worse.
