Nice article with this lovely photo of Kolty
I agree, very nice article. It was great that the author did his little test with Elizabeth Paehtz and Thomas Friedel. I have often heard of Koltanowski’s knight’s tour exhibitions, but I had never seen one.
Years ago, just on a lark, I gave a blindfold simul on four boards at the Pittsburgh Chess Club. Isn’t playing blindfold kind of like what you do when you calculate variations without moving the pieces around? Maybe, but it’s a lot easier to make mistakes. I lost two of the games because of “oops, I forgot that that piece was still on that square”. Back to the drawing board for that stunt!
I saw Kolty give the “Knight’s Tour” demonstration at one of the Paul Masson tournaments, probably in the mid to late 1970s. In addition to what was described in the ChessBase article, he also brought out the blackboard (filled with words and numbers) that was used the previous year. Without looking at this board, he executed another Knight’s Tour on the year-old board. Pretty amazing!
