Latvian chess pre-World War II

I need to get up to speed in chess in Riga in the 1930’s for an article with a tight-ish deadline.

In the years 1925-1940, when was Em. Lasker in Riga? I don’t have the new biography.

Was the Latvian chess magazine Šahs published prior to 1940? Is there a research collection that has copies in the US? (I did not see them in the White Collection.)

Any accessible English-language references on Latvian (or even Baltic) chess in the 1930’s?

I don’t expect you to do my research, but would appreciate pointers to good resources!

There is a Usenet group soc.culture.baltics – maybe you could ask there.

Another thought. Are you familiar with “Ask a Librarian”? If they have that at loc.gov, they will perhaps have access to a national library in Latvia. It would be well to show that you write seriously about chess. TTFN.
