Looking for an Old Rating

FWIW, I had a person show up at my tournament this past weekend and I went to get him a non-member ID to be a house player. The US Chess computer puked and asked if he was the same guy who played a quick quad in 1995.

I recall that it was the 1986 Annual dated January 1987 that had the comprehensive rating list.

I am glad to see/hear that the USCF has its act together. I know from personal experience of a player returning to chess after an 8 year layoff back in the late 1980s. I sent in the new membership dues, and in the rating report used the player’s old USCF ID number [not a life member], and an old rating found in an old paper supplement. The cross table I received back from the USCF had the player as an unrated with a new USCF ID number. I wrote back to USCF after receiving this error to inform them that the player was not an unrated. The new cross table I received for the event took the players old rating (I had submitted) and the new rating received for being an unrated and averaged them together, and listed the player as provisional. I am talking about a player who had played USCF rated chess for a number of years, dropped out for about 8 years, then returned. As I am stating this is something that happened a number of years ago, but it did happen. I am glad that it apparently will not happen again.

Oops, you are correct. I misread the cover.

I just checked my collection of paper supplements and found two copies of that huge 1986 supplement?!

I have also suspected the predictive value of very old ratings. That said it is of more value than treating them as unrated. I recommended to the rating committee several years ago that for players with old ratings, they should have the K value based on the number of games in the past x years. That way the rating can update more quickly especially for higher rated players.

There was a player in the tournament my club ran today, Richard Maliszewski, who I think has an old rating. Can anyone find an old rating for him? Thanks.

There is a Richard Maliszewski of KS in the 1973 annual list. His rating was 1629/16.

Thanks.

I’m glad I asked on Saturday because he played on Sunday in the quad tournament I ran and his old rating seemed to be place him in an appropriate quad based on his level, uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?201904285462.0 (the tournament he played in on Saturday was an unrated rapid tournament that had four players and was run as a double round robin so it didn’t really matter that we didn’t have his old rating for that tournament).

It would be great if the old annual rating lists were able to be downloaded from US Chess.

Steve, would you be willing to make a tax-deductible donation to help fund scanning old rating lists?

I sent an email twice to uscf@uschess.org as well) to try and get Richard’s old rating reinstated but I haven’t gotten any response and his old rating hasn’t been reinstated. Is there some other email I should be sending this to?

I expect that the office has been, and still is, handling the entries and other issues for the National Elementary. I would counsel patience.

The next official ratings list won’t be generated until May 15th, so there’s time.

Sending a followup email is recommended, email is not a guaranteed delivery system in general. Moreover, Outlook is known to lose emails and individuals sometimes miss seeing requests, especially at this time of year.

I already sent a follow up email. Are you suggesting I send another one?

You need to decide how you want to interact with the office, I can’t do that for you.

Sigh. Nice way of avoiding the question.

As the chief of last year’s National Elementary and remembering what the office had to do last year, I would expect that the office is once again handling a lot of communications dealing with a lot of stuff related to the players, coaches, vendors, guests, TDs, supplies, etc.

The tournament ends on 5/12 and the staff may be back in the office on 5/13. With a 5/15 deadline I would continue to counsel patience.

Micah, Susan says she sent you an email saying she’d take care of this after the Elementary, but that email bounced.

I got two emails from her, thanks.
