Magnus Caelsen Invitational

When baseball resumes, we are likely to see 7-inning doubleheaders with ties after 10 innings. This is offensive to purists, but beats “no baseball” or “playing more than 17 innings on Tuesday with another 14 innings on Wednesday.”

There will be time enough for tradition in 2021. (But yes, DH rule is bad.)

Five of the 2020 Candidates, plus Nakamura and Firoujza, will play in the Carlsen invitational.
“Extra cameras” will be placed in the players’ homes as an anti-cheating measure.

I don’t see where extra cameras is going to have much impact, someone who really wants to cheat could easily get around them.

With no OTB chess is sight, the players in this tournament are using up the opening prep they built up for the halted Candidates tournament.
Caruana said today, “I don’t know about other players but I already used up all my Candidates ideas!”

I’m late to comment on this thread, but is it me or is the purpose of chess events (WCC, Candidates, etc) for the fans of chess, or is it a place where the best in the world can show their skills against other top players? My point is, chess is never going to be a spectator sport. Carlsen or Caruana or other Super GM’s could care less if I get anything out of watching or not. These events are for them. And THEY ALONE should decide if it meets their needs as competitors.

I rather enjoyed looking over the games during this online event, and later I analysed the games in more detail at my own leisure. It did not bother me that these games had been played at a speed faster than I can think. Have you ever watched Nakamura on Chess.com? There is plenty of good chess being played at fast time controls, but to get back to the OP, I agree that standard time control events should be decided with standard time controls. But like I said, they don’t care what I think!

Stay safe…

They are like any professional athletes. If there were no “fans”, no sponsor would be willing to pay for the matches/tournaments, and the players would have to get real jobs. Whether or not they care about the fans, their livelihood depends on them. Chess will never match the popularity of major spectator sports like football (note that the football that is the world’s most popular sport is not American football) or cricket, but when there is a big match or tournament, lots of people follow the games online in real time – they don’t just play through the games later.

As for the quality of the chess, my impression is that there were a lot more blunders and missed wins in this event than you would see at normal slow time controls. However, this actually makes the games more interesting and therefore draws more spectators. That’s one of the main reasons for holding this kind of event. They really do care what we think.
