While I do love the concepts of this attack, a recent review of many of Max Lange’s games have led me to wonder,
why is he deemed the “author” from a historical viewpoint for this the line attributed to him? For example, on chess.com, I could only find 21 games attributed to him. Thus, are there some of you who are chess historians who can answer this question as to the attribution of this attack to Max Lange??
Hooper and Whyld credit Lange as having suggested it, and openings are sometimes named after the person who (reportedly) first suggested the move, even if they didn’t play it much, or in some cases, never played it.
The Max Lange was something I played for a while, as I tried to stay out of the Ruy Lopez due to the extreme length of some of the lines.
