Minimum rating floor in the online rating systems

Organizers should be careful not to call their top sections “open” if they don’t want extremely low-rated players to play in them. They should be careful to explicitly state the entry requirements for each section. e.g. “Premier, open to players rated 1600 and up”. There can, of course, be overlap, such as the above plus “Candidates, open to players rated 1400-2199”.

Good names for top sections not open to all include “Premier”, “Championship”, “Major”, etc, as long as the allowable range is specified. Self-contradictory would be “Open Section, open to players rated 1600 and up”.

On ICCF, Open tournaments are for players rated up to 1899.

I’ve created a new topic, Pairing small Swiss System tournaments, to discuss problems with pairing Swiss System tournaments with a small number of players. This topic is for discussion of the minimum rating floor in the online rating systems.
