It’s written by his only friend in Iceland by the time of his death and focuses on Fischer’s years in Iceland. This is the man who was instrumental in getting Fischer released from Japanese detention and who helped secure his being granted an Icelandic passport and citizenship.
You can read a review of an advance copy of the book by Frederic Freidel on the Chessbase web site. The review contains much information about Freidel’s telephone contact with Fischer over a period of years when he was living in Iceland. Apparently Fischer was in negotiations with Anand to play a match with him using Fischer Random.
BTW, the same ChessBase page notes Stan Vaughn has proposed sainthood for Fischer, “documenting” several miracles. My guess is there will be strong competition for Devil’s Advocate.
Stan Vaughn…slowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch…Given the books published today in Italy regarding corrupt practices in the Vatican, including the purchasing of sainthood, one can only hope that St. Bobby’s feast day is cause for major partying in the world chess community.
