I knew Mark just a little as we lived in the same town and met once at a chess board. He won a nice game and later I invited him to play together in a team event (EASTERN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP 2011). That appears to be his last tournament. Couple years ago I learned that he passed away in 2014. Now, just recently I came across his memoir notes that were published by his nephew in 2018.
In those notes he touches upon his chess activity but very-very briefly. I now know that he was a participant of USSR Junior chess championship in 1947 and that he won US Senior Open in 1990 or 1991.
Unfortunately 1990-1991 predates MSA and I am curious to see the tournament table and perhaps some other information. Can anyone help?
There might have been a story about it in Chess Life, though most likely without a complete crosstable.
The office does have a large stack (about ten feet tall, I’m told) of printouts of rating reports, probably going back as far as the mid 80’s and continuing into the early 1990’s. Unfortunately they are not well organized, so finding a specific event in them is rather time-consuming.
I’ve been lobbying for having the printed rating supplements and those tournament crosstables scanned and posted on the web, this might be something people could consider making a specific donation towards.
Yes, there was a one-page write-up in Feb. 1991 Chess Life with Mark’s picture and one of his games.
The event took place on the cruise ship and a big picture of contestants and the family members made the front cover.
