No increment or delay listed in the time control on a rating report

For tournaments with a time control with no increment or delay, is the new norm now simply to have the time control listed on the rating report as something like “G/15” or “G/30” instead of “G/15;d0” or “G/30;d0”?

Well, not intentionally but it does appear the new parser is allowing that. I wonder what the actual time control in those sections was, though.

I see around 1100 sections without an increment or delay field since November but I also see around 20K that had a delay including 1300 that have d0. By comparison, there are around 9200 that have an increment.

I’ll raise this with staff and check with Leago on what their code is doing.

Not listing the increment or delay in the time control, even if it is zero, when submitting a tournament for rating should be disallowed, right?

Eh. Having to put in “;d0” (or I suppose “;+0”) seems dumb.

This has been discussed by staff and brought to Leago’s attention, but I do not yet know what the final result will be. This is somewhere between a technical issue and a policy issue, so it is not clear who gets the final say on this. And if a decision is made to change it, then it has to go into the production schedule, so this will likely be around for a while.

The only question in my mind is whether something like G/25 or G/29 is actually d0 meaning it is quick-rated only but G/25;d5 would be dual-rated. IMHO it’s better to leave no room for doubt, but that’s not my decision to make.

I only see a few section with time controls like G/10, G/25, G/29 or G/60 where a reasonable increment or delay could change what ratings system the games in that section are rated under.

In my opinion, if someone puts a time control without an increment or delay, then the time control should default to delay/0 and display that on the rating report. There is a requirement within the rules to put this on your advertising, but no such requirement to state it in a rating report that I’m aware of.

Once someone sees the delay/0 appear and that isn’t correct and it gets rated in the incorrect rating system, I’m sure they’ll be in touch to get that corrected.

Agree. If I saw just G/25 I would double check and I would say the answer is most likely d5 followed by +5 and seldom, if ever, G/25;d0.

drifting a bit..
If I were King, there would be a minimum of 5 seconds Delay/Bonus mandatory for anything that is regular or quick rated. As someone who has flagged at least twice with d/5 when I was basically shuffling pieces - I do prefer d/10 to d/5.

d3 is used for most Quick events. My club’s G/25;d3 is explicitly chosen to avoid something that fast affecting regular ratings. Because of choosing time controls like that I have both a quick rating and a regular rating but have not played in a dual-rated time control.

This is a good excuse to practice doing string searches in SQL Server.

In quick-only events submitted on MUIR, I see:

103 with no delay or increment listed.
358 with d0
140 with d2
299 with d3
64 with d4
593 with d5
4 with d7
4 with d10
3 with d15
94 with +1
107 with +2
208 with +3
11 with +4
539 with +5
1 with +6
9 with +7
141 with +10

The question is, of those 103 events with no delay or increment listed, if they had the minimum recommended Rulebook delay applied to their time control (per 5E2, 5E: 3 seconds for quick only base times), would it change any of the events to be dual-rated?

G/15 38
G/20 55
G/25 14
G/29 4

Only the 4 at G/29 would have moved into dual rated, and those are ones I am inclined to think were legitimately G/29;d0.

I’m inclined to agree with you. However, I still think it would be good to list events that don’t specify an increment or delay of zero as d/0 and that might prompt the TD or players who know differently to get it fixed if they feel it is necessary (which for the majority we can obviously see it isn’t).
