No two word last names allowed

After reading the apologia by Alexey Root at Chessbase (en.chessbase.com/post/jennifer- … lt#discuss) I surfed over to the USCF website hoping to research how Jennifer Yu has done against strong competition. I typed in “Yu” and received this response: “At least 3 characters of name information is required if not limited by state.” After scratching my head I decided to input “So,” as in GM Wesley So. The same, aforementioned response appeared. Why?

“I think a gentleman is someone who holds the comfort of other people above their own. The instinct to do that is inside every good man, I believe. The rules about opening doors and buying dinner and all of that other ‘gentleman’ stuff is a chess game, especially these days.” - Anna Kendrick

Try “So,”

There are over 1400 names in the system if one enters just “Yu,” and over 5500 if you just enter “So,” . The look up function needs more detail to sort the results down to a manageable size. Anytime it returns more than 200 it will ask for more detail.

So the initial search is programed with at least 3 characters and will require more if that is too broad.

Try entering ‘Jennifer Yu’ or ‘Wesley So’. The former returns just 4 matches, the latter 70, though ‘So, Wes’ cuts it down to 7. With over a million names in the database these days, some additional specificity helps.
