This quote, for me, says it all. It remids me of the principle espoused by Rotary Interntional. Is the deal fair for all concerned?
"He says chess is fun and it teaches you stuff: “Stuff that helps you in the real world. Like for trades. You always want to trade fairly in chess and you always need to trade fairly in the world,” he says. “You don’t want to, like, give someone a car if they’re gonna give you $5.”
I don’t understand this, and admittedly I am out of context, but when I play, I attempt to trade say my bishop for my opponent’s queen. I doubt my opponent considers that a fair trade. In chess we always try to trade unfairly.
I think that what the kid was trying to say was that at a minimum you want to make sure that you’re equal in a trade. If material is equal in an endgame, it doesn’t guarantee a draw. What I liked was the sense of fairness expressed in the kid’s outlook. That will help him no matter where life takes him.
