Former USCF President Harold Winston may appear in a story on 60 Minutes tonight (March 9th, 2008), they’re doing a story on a case he’s been working on. Harold is an attorney who works on appeals for the Cook County (IL) Public Defenders Office.
This loosely reminds of a case a few short years ago when two different men were convicted of the same murder, in circumstances where everyone agree that at most only one man was involved. Everyone agrees that one of those convicted of murder was not there and was not involved.
Yet many in the legal profession argued that nothing unjust had occurred.
BTWay, their two trials were separate, tho only months apart in time.
Apparently Harold’s client was not released immediately following the other person’s confession – or, at least, he was not totally cleared right away. The state’s attorney’s office still had to decide whether to retry.
Now, in Friday’s paper, there is a story about the state’s attorney finally asking a judge to dismiss the charges, and the judge doing so. The story is accompanied by a large picture of the man, along with three of his family members, and Harold. Of the five, the one with the biggest grin is Harold – I’ve never seen such a delighted smile on his face.
I think Harold told me that his client had been out on minimal bail since the hearing a few day after the 60 Minutes story ran, I’m glad to see that the state finally dropped the charges. There were a lot of details 60 Minutes didn’t go into that made this decision the right thing to do.
