Player OTB behavior

Among the few times I have played under “ideal” circumstances was a tournament in the activity area of a church in WV. Several of the players brought beautiful wooden chess sets to play on. The players were respectful of the game and each other. It was almost unnaturally quiet. Analysis was done in another room. Doughnuts and coffee/tea were provided gratis for the players. The lighting was good. Plenty of space on the tables and between tables. There was a pizza shop across the street. The tournaments in Parkersburg, WV, each year also come close to that ideal. It is always easy to be grateful to organizers who do the job properly to make playing conditions as good as possible. Then you don’t have to worry about decorum being followed.

Decorum may have little to do with whether or not playing conditions are excellent.

We once got banned from a tournament venue, not because of playing conditions, but because one of the players (an adult, I believe) chose to scribble all over the hotel’s table cloth with an ink pen.

Victoria BC’s Grand Pacific Open is a model tournament, in my view. Spacious playing hall, separate skittles room, attentive and competent directors, and it’s in a great hotel (with special low rates for the event) in the best part of Victoria. It’s held over the Easter weekend, 1 round Friday evening, 2 Saturday and Sunday, and 1 Monday morning. Boards, sets, and clocks are provided.

Air fare??
