I remember a year ago when there was much discussion about moving the Polgar Invitational to Texas Tech. Most of it was negative.
Well, I went to the event last week – and frankly I saw nothing but good results and a field of 52 girls treated like grandmasters. There was a pleasant opening ceremony that you just don’t see anymore in chess; a nice playing venue; visible support from top-level administrators at Texas Tech; plenty of side events and freebies.
I’m sure this thread will turn into a “Why we should hate Susan Polgar for this or that.” But I’ve got to give credit where it is due. The event was every bit as good as past Polgars I have attended (I’ve gone to three).
As a state president, we need to spur more girls to play and stick with chess. If this event is helping with that cause – it’s fine with me.
I’m also guessing that Texas Tech’s location near the Lubbock airport is an asset for out-of-state attendees (as opposed to say, the distance of Lindsborg, KS from a major airport).
Southwest Airlines flies to Lubbock, although it may require two stops from some destinations. However, Southwest Airlines does still allow for TWO pieces of checked baggage – which is important for a lengthy tournament.

I don’t think anyone, would put down Susan for what she does with youth chess. And knowing Lubbock, and the people there as I do, ( I have Many friends there in that area) you will never meet a nicer group of people anywhere in the Country.
Glad to hear it was a success.
