Tonight will be the start of the Colorado Springs Chess Club’s Cabin Fever Reliever (4SS, G/45d10, USCF-rated, $10 entry)! It is a 2 week event with 2 games tonight.
This week’s newsletter contains the April Quick Six prizes and final standings along with a Tim Brennan chess tale about the Colorado vs New Mexico match, where he compares himself to Connor McGregor.
Seeing as going down a piece for a pawn is a fairly straightforward loss, black may have had better practical chances eschewing Nxf6 and instead playing the still ugly:
… g5
Qxd7 gxh4
Qg4+ Kf8
Qg7+ Ke8
Rae1 Rxe1
Rxe1+ Kd7
Qxf7+ Kc6
where black is “merely” down a passed pawn on f6 with doubled and vulnerable h pawns and a “somewhat” vulnerable king, but in a more fluid position with the queen’s rook finally getting activated than the prosaic piece for pawn disadvantage that actually occurred. I still strongly prefer the white position but if I found myself in the unfortunate position of playing black I would prefer the pawn-down black position with its complications as opposed to the pawn-vs-piece black position.
