I read and enjoyed the DuBois novel. However, the chess master stuff is mostly just background for the character.

There’s a recurring character, a teenage chess master named Zhenya, who appears in the most recent Martin Cruz Smith novels: “Stalin’s Ghost,” “Wolves Eat Dogs” and the latest, “Tatiana.”
