I have just learned that Philip Peterson passed away from a fall while hiking on Christmas Day. Philip was a professional photographer who has won numerous awards, including some within the chess genre. I’m fairly sure he has won CJA awards but I don’t have the resources to verify that. He spent much of his life in Seattle and was a frequent contributor to the award-winning Northwest Chess magazine. Below is a link to the October 20 cover. I am confident some people with stronger Northwest ties than I do will provide a more satisfactory testimony to this talented man. He will be missed.
