Sacrifice or not

The following article prompted the debate as to if the move Rc8 meets the definition of a “sacrifice”

What do you say?

Its not a sacrafice. A sacrifice is losing material for a long term initiative, in which there is no guarantee that the material will be recovered In your example, the white player has recovered the material plus more in only a few moves.

In any event, black trading his rook for rook on move 24 was clearly a blunder.

No. It is not a sacrifice. It is a trade. Black must take white’s rook or black will lose!

Ehhhh, I’m not so sure. When I played the highest-rated person I’ve ever beat, I won by seeing a forced mate that he completely missed, involving a rook sac. He tried to block the mate, but it only gave me a mate in one. Anyway, a sacrifice could be defined as when a player loses material to gain other compensation. Not necessarily long term, only to get an advantage.

I stand by my definition: A sacrifice is giving up material for a long term initiative.
Giving up anything for a forced mate, or pawn promotion is not a sacrifice.

You are describing a positional sacrifice , very rare and hard to do.
