According to today’s Chess Cafe’ column, Gary Lane says that Sam Sloan’s pet Damiano Defense is refuted. Apparently the key move is 9.Bxb7. Lane even cites a game of Sloan’s.

This refutation is probably as old as Damiano! It provides a nice exercise for kids to broaden their imaginations and teach them lessons about proper development of the pieces. They love to hunt the king down on an open board.

Wow! That article makes it really hard to follow the variations. I had to paste it into a text editor and add my own line breaks and indentation.
Not a defense I’d ever use, but I want to know how to beat it efficiently.
