Supernationals VI (2017) attendance

No entries from U.S. territories?

No, though there is one ‘foreign’ entry, from Jamaica.

Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands are separate FIDE member federations, their players seldom show up for US Chess events.

The player count includes 10 from state “TERR”, the detail says state = PR, are they from Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is a state for postal purposes, it is not a state federation for US Chess governance purposes, because Puerto Rico has its own FIDE federation. All the territories are lumped together into ‘TERR’, if there were any players from other territories such as Guam, the Marshall Islands, or the USVI, they’d be in ‘TERR’, too.

It looks like the team list uses the state field in the team code table, the player list uses the ‘governance state’ field in the member table, which is why it breaks out N-Cal and S-Cal separately and has ‘TERR’.

I was looking at the team data earlier, so I missed seeing the players from PR. There are some players under ‘NO’ on the team state list, which I guess is because they’re coded as ‘none’ for team affiliation.

On this page:

uschess.org/tournaments/2017 … ge=ADVANCE

it shows 48 boxes representing “states”. There is only one box for California. There are boxes labeled NO (no state), FO (foreign – this is where the Jamaica entries are), PR (Puerto Rico), and DC (Washington D.C.). So out of 50 actual states, 44 are represented. The missing six states are AK, MT, ND, SD, UT, and WV.

The team boxes show FO, NO and PR and have a single entry for CA.
The individual boxes split CA and show FOR and TERR.
The six missing states are AK, MT, ND, NV, SD and VT. (an obvious typo/mistranscription from Bruce with a U instead of a V and a W instead of an N)

12:45 PM CDT 5/5 - 5186 players (started the day with 5168). Plus 734 in blitz sections (no adds yet today). Rated players sections range from 82 and 477 with one championship section (K12) and six under sections already over 256, two more championship (K3, K8) and two more under sections over 200, three more championship (K1, K5, K6)and six more under sections over 100 and the K-9 championship at 82. The four Unrated players sections range from 43 to 70.

I’d like to see more than 5300 by the end of the day (preferably more than 5400).

TX has 749 to NY’s 949 in a race for the most that is the closest it’s been in a long time, so there might be a new leading state this tournament. IL and TN are tied for third at 319 with FL having 309. MI (202) has had late surges in the past.

NY (954) is now 201 ahead of TX (753) instead of being only 200 ahead yesterday. IL (340), TN (325) and FL (313) are the leading contenders for third. In the past TN has had late surges.
One more state is now represented. The unrepresented states are AK, MT, ND, SD, VT.

There are a lot of players in higher grade level sections when they would qualify for lower grade level sections and a lot of that looks to be trying to get into a better rating level section and the desirable section didn’t happen to match the grade level.
The largest section broke the 500 barrier (K-5 U900 is currently 502 and could end up with four 7-0 co-champions - six if it is accelerated and the lower half 1-0 players beat the upper half 0-1 players)

Pardon me for using this thread to post an inquiry. I’m doing it because I figure someone knowledgeable might be reading this thread. I will also try creating a thread in the USCF Issues forum.

I recently received a flyer about the 2017 U.S. Blind, which will be in a new location this year, Lindsborg, KS. The organizer asked me if I knew of any junior (20 or below) blind players. I realized that I don’t, and indeed, we haven’t seen even one, all the years I have been assisting at the U.S. Blind. But it occurred to me that good people to ask about this would be milling around at SuperNationals. Unfortunately I won’t be there (I live hundreds of miles away). Can anyone suggest something I might do to get the word out to visually impaired chess-playing students? Not only those who are there (probably not so many), but those with whom the coaches, directors, and other people at SuperNationals might be acquainted. It’s too bad I didn’t think of this until right now, but I sure would like to get some new blood involved in things like the U.S. Blind or the IBCA.

But not only that. The U.S. Blind organizer told me about another upcoming tournament, the FIDE World Junior Chess Championship for the Disabled, to be held right here in the U.S., in Orlando, Florida, June 22 to 29. I had never heard of this, but it’s, like, next month! OMG!

Here is a link to information about the U.S. Blind (among other events): uschess.org/content/view/10015/95
It is in mid-September this year.

From the US Chess Home Page:

I think that paragraph needs some re-writing.

Seems perfectly clear to me. Until the tournament is actually held and the players actually show up you don’t know if the final number will really exceed 5335.
As an example the All Girls National last month had more people register than the previous record of 448 then all the storms on the east coast caused tons of flight cancellations and we ended up with lots of cancellations and no-shows, finishing with 423.
We are only on pace to surpass the previous record, strongly favored to surpass the previous record, but haven’t actually set a new record yet.

Here is a list of sections with the total number of kids that played in the section (even if subsequently transferred to a different section), the winning score and the number with that score. Only K-1 had multiple 7-0 scores and its number of players was below the point where it could have been accelerated (257+). Noteworthy is that the two largest sections (484 and 521 players) were under sections and were not accelerated but still ended up with a single 7-0 each even though they could have had four.

HS 1452 1569 (1492 in 2015, 1444 last year) (new U1900 section added last year) (16 less than last pre-registration)
Note that 2013 adds up to 5337 instead of 5335 so there were probably two mid-tournament section changes.
2017 adds up to 5595 instead of 5575 so there were 20 mid-tournament section changes. With a sectional overall growth of 17 that means that the final pre-registration of 5578 was three more than the final number that played, and the small number of last day entries almost matched the number of no-shows/last minute withdrawals (of the twelve pairing chiefs I was pairing a bit over 700 of the players, had two withdrawals prior to making pairings, and one round one no-show forfeit).

Well, it didn’t happen. Too bad.
