jjamesge1, here’s what I infer from the clip: The show was taped before a live studio audience. A new scene was about to be shot, involving a chess game. The episode’s director wanted to begin the scene with Cosby in the process of placing pieces on the board rather than sitting before a board that was already set up. To achieve this establishing shot, he instructed Cosby to remove some pieces from the board – in an overly specific way that Cosby exploited for both its humor value and its symbolic significance.
