Couple of posters (notably Bill Brock), in a different thread (4 Point King), mentioned the Szen Position.
It does look like a facinating position, so I thought I’d start a new thread on it.
If anybody wanted to crunch out an 8 piece nalimov ending… that position might actually by worth crunching out. Of course, the Nalimov table of the ending would include all other 3 vs 3 pawn endings also.
Not sure how much hardware and time would be needed to crunch out an ending with 3 pawns on each side though. Probably not feasable yet, maybe a few more years though.
Actually, crunching that out might lead to some interesting new theory on pawn endings.
I did read an article recently in Chess Life that said 7 piece endings were being calculated out on a regular basis. -All six piece endings were calculated out a few years ago. Not sure when though. but all 1.2T of the 3-4-5-6 tables are available for download. -See Chess Life for the website. I’ll look it up later and post it on this thread.
EDIT: It appears that the website mentioned by GM Pal Benko (k4it.de) does not have the Nalimov tables available for download. But rather you can set up on a virtual chessboard any 3/4/5/6 piece ending, and it will search its database for the best continuation.
