Local club is considering giving out under class prizes. I just want to make sure that I understand section 32.
Let’s say there is a 1st, and 2nd place prize as well as an U2000, U1600 and U1200 prizes.
An 1800 scores 3.5; an 1100 scores 3.5; a 1900, 1500, and 1000 score 3.
The prize distribution would be a pool of 1st and 2nd place for the 1800 and 1100. But how would the under distribution work? Would they all be tied for the U2000 prize or would I pool each under prize?
You need to know the amounts before you can answer these questions, and also if you’re talking about purely cash prizes versus titles, trophies, or other indivisible prizes. To break it down a little, assuming all of this is just cash prizes:
3.5 1800
3.5 1100
3.0 1900
3.0 1500
3.0 1000
The 1800 is eligible for: 1st place Open (possibly split with 1100 pooling 2nd) or 1st place U2000 (possibly split with 1100 pooling 2nd). They will take whichever ends up giving them the most money.
The 1100 is eligible for: 1st place Open (split with 1800 pooling 2nd), 1st place U2000 (split with 1800 pooling 2nd), 1st place U1600 (outright), or 1st place U1200. They will take whichever ends up giving them the most money, which is very likely to either be a) 1st + 2nd place Open split with the 1800 or b) 1st place U1600 (outright).
EDIT: you could also get a pool with the 1800 bringing 1st open and the 1100 bringing 1st U2000 - or vice versa - which might actually be the way to go. Again, all prizes of different amounts makes this easier to work out.
…problem is that’s as far as I can tell you without knowing the cash amounts, and I’ve already had to assume that these were all cash prizes. If the 1100 takes the U1600, then the 1800 can take the Open, and after that you gotta calculate.
Some key pieces of Rule 32:
A player only gets one cash award (32B1).
A player gets the biggest payout possible for them (32B1, 32B3, 32B5).
A player can’t split a pool with more than 1 prize per player splitting (32B3).
If a player is eligible for place (1st, 2nd) and place (U2000, U1600), prizes of equal amounts, they claim the place prize, or the highest ranked class prize.
Because of this, it’s recommend that all cash prizes be of different amounts.
yea, they are the same for all the under categories. 1st - 100. 2nd - 75. unders 50.
Given what @ulmont said, 1800 + 1100 split the open section cash prizes as that gives them both the most money. And, the 1900 claims U2000, 1500 claims U1600 and 1000 claims U1200. The reason being that if 1000 was forced to split the higher prizes, they would receive less money then just claiming the U1200 outright. (The same reasoning can be said for the 1500).
