unrateds and under prizes

  1. are unrated players eligible for under prizes? 2. should a player with a 1988 regular rating be assigned a quick chess rating if it’s his first qc event? Same question for a player with an 1160 rating…thanks

If the prize is listed as ‘Under 2000’, then only rated players are eligible.

If the prize is listed as ‘Under 2000/Unrated’, unrated players are also eligible for it.

I’ve never run a quick-chess-only event, but if I did I would probably include a statement to the effect that regular-rated players without a quick rating will be assigned their regular rating for pairing and eligibility purposes.

BTW, the ratings system will start a quick-unrated player off with his or her regular rating as if it was based on 10 games (or the current number of games played if the regular rating is based on 4-9 games.)

Some quick-rated tournaments use regular, rather than quick, ratings for pairings and prize purposes. Still others use whichever rating is higher. Check your friendly TLA for details.
