Hey All,
On the below page, would it be possible to add some extra filtering options? Tags such as, ‘1 day event’, ‘2 day event’, ‘3 day event’, ‘Classical time control’, ‘Rapid Time control’, ‘Blitz Time control’? I’m sure there are other meaningful tags that could be added.
Thanks!
Some tournaments have multiple schedules that merge together (a two-day schedule for a three or four day event) or side events that are not mentioned separately (a blitz side event at a major tournament) so filtering might sometimes miss a bigger event, but those are often well enough known that filtering for them is not an issue. Time controls can be different for different schedules. I am guessing Quick was meant instead of Rapid and Dual would show up under both Quick and Regular (Classical) assuming the time control was put in its own field and not it the body of the TLA.
There are also events that have both single-day and multiple-day sections. I’ve seen many tournaments with Saturday sections, Saturday-Sunday sections and Sunday sections.
It might be better if I clarify the problem that I’m trying to solve.
Here are some typical searches that I’d like to be able perform. These are just examples.
- I’d like to be able to see all tournaments within 300 miles of my zip code that have time control of G/60 or longer.
- Show me all tournaments within 300 miles of my zip code with a total prize fund greater than $1,000 and a time control of G/75 or longer
- Show me all events within 300 miles of my zip code that are single day events consisting of at least 4 rounds.
It might be the case, that the Organizer submitting the TLA would need to select Tags that apply to their event. This has the problem that an organizer could just select all tags regardless of their relevance, just to increase visibility. However, maybe we could just operate on good faith.
I don’t think it would be too difficult to parse the TLA and add tags programmatically.
In regards to the points mentioned about an event having multiple sections, single-day section and a multi-day section, the tags would still apply. This particular event would be returned by a search that sought out single day events and likewise it would be returned by a search for multi-day events. Both are true.
I’m not looking for perfection, just some extra sorting options.
I tried writing such a parser once, there were too many different ways to write up TLAs to find a reliable parsing method, resulting in a large number (>25%) error rate with both false positives and false negatives. Suggestions that TLAs be more structured were a non-starter. Maybe an AI engine, properly trained, could do a better job these days. Might be a good task for next summer’s interns.
Of course, only 20-25% of the events we rate have a TLA in the first place. Most of the others probably aren’t ones that would benefit from a TLA, either because they’re not open to most players (like an in-school or after school club or a chess training program) or because they’re targeted at a group of players that are mainly local or in a non-urban market. But it is worth noting that I used to run Sunday afternoon events at a local Arby’s in Lincoln, and we once had several players come down from South Dakota (over 200 miles), for an event that seldom had prizes over $25.
That sounds like the sort of thing my friends I would have done back in high school/college. I’m old now…hard to justify that level of travel for a Beef n’ Cheddar.
I appreciate all the responses!
