Special prizes for Life Titles:
Top First Category (or higher title) Under 1900: $500.
Class A (1800-1999) $2400-1200-600-300
If a player is eligible for both prizes, I am assuming he would get the higher of the two. How will one know the others that are in the running for the “Top First Category (or higher title) Under 1900” prize?
Actually, the “Special Prizes for Life Titles” are exactly that – special prizes. That means that a player may win both a Place (or Class, but not both Place and Class) prize and a Special prize. The same applies to the Mixed Doubles prizes – they are also Special prizes.
I will make sure we clarify that on the website. Thanks fo asking!
My question about title-based prizes: What is the cut-off date at which a player is “titled” for purposes of prize distribution? It could happen that a result the week before the U.S. Open (or whatever tournament) grants the final norm for a player to move up to the next higher title.
Suppose that is a Monday-night club event that ends the Monday of the U.S. Open Traditional schedule—but the player enters one of the faster schedules. The norm calculation also takes a few days from the time the crosstable appears at MSA…has all this been worked out?
OK, I saw this at the U.S. Open TLA: Life Titles must be established by July 1, 2013.
Very good. That still leaves a tiny bit of wiggle room to argue whether that refers to the relevant rated event where the title is earned, or the date the title appears on MSA… or whatever. Lucky for us, all chessplayers are reasonable and won’t nitpick to that extreme degree.
He did not say “U1900 Title”. He was referring to somebody already having the first category title (essentially class A) that is currently rated under 1900 (maybe 1875).
As an example I have three of the five norms needed for the Candidate Master title, and if the pre-1992 norms were included I’d probably have all five. However my current rating is 1968 and if I actually had another two Candidate Master norms I’d be eligible for:
Top Candidate Master (or higher title) Under 2100: $x.
Upon further review, I wonder what is the purpose behind these special prizes for life titles. It looks like: A. Only a small percentage of players will be eligible to win them; and B. It is sort of a nod to players who are “over-titled” based on their current rating—or under-rated based on their lifetime title. Perhaps read here “older, more experienced players.”
There will likely be quite a few OLMs rated 2200-2299, but I wonder how many players will be eligible for the other special prizes. I did a quick surf through MSA for regular Forum posters, as a test. Out of 12-14 players I checked, only two would qualify for special prizes—and both of them hail from Illinois.
