USCF Members & Non-USCF Members In Same Tournament

That’s my point. I personally don’t like it but in no way am I saying get rid of it. It’s my personal preference and I put it in the trash everytime I get it.

If you take a look at it from my view, I pay $49/yr for a membership. The magazine is crap, and all I get for it is to play in rated tournaments. The TD has to pay for the games to be rated. Some people like it, good for them.

Do you really think that USCF makes a lot of money from USChess on the newstand? I highly doubt it, in fact, I’d be highly surprised if newsstand purchases were even close to 10% of the total magazines.

The membership to me is a necessary evil. For me to continue to play rated board tournaments locally, I have to pay this.

If you guys like Solitare chess, that’s fine. Personally I think it’s useless.

USCF newsstand sales have always been miniscule compared to membership revenue. Subscriptions from libraries may even be higher than newsstand sales. Check the November issue, that’s the one that should have the Publisher’s Mailing Statement in it, which indicates both subscription and newsstands sales for the past year.

FWIW, I was at a Barnes & Noble store the other day. They had several copies of CHESS (the British magazine) on the rack, but no copies of Chess Life.

I don’t agree that Chess Life is written for the newsstand or for players below 1800. There are certainly some features that are easier for lower rated players (like me) to comprehend, but I know experts who enjoy Bruce Pandolfini’s Solitaire Chess column too.
