…without a National Tournament in Texas. Did memberships dip? Were members there disgruntled at their fate?
Envy is the one sin that gives no pleasure to the sinner.
But there was a Texas State Regional event in Brownsville last month that drew 1,241 players (almost 100 new USCF members!) and next week we will have the State Scholastic Championships that should have even better participation! USCF members in Texas are still doing okay…
Thanks for asking!
'Still working on that bid to have a National event in your area?
Thank you for the humor. Actually, we have an event coming up that rivals most USCF
nationals in terms of attendance in February, the Texas State Championships.
Chess players are truly blessed in Texas with the diversity and number of events offered.
Hopefully, chess can experience the growth in other states that we have enjoyed in the
Lone Star State.

El Centro College in January hosted our first of many scheduled USCF-rated scholastic tournaments for Dallas-area inner-city kids which drew 56 participants, including 32 new memberships and 8 renewals. And we processed all those on-site, thank you very much.
Oh, yeah. All is well in the United States of Texas. 8^)
GOOD CHESS!

Just curious panchess, what are you doing for chess in your area?? We have many
strong affiliates in the DFW areaa that are promoting chess. Hopefully, you are
doing the same.

I have now e-mailed the USCF National Office three times asking if there is a way I could assist with finding a potential National Scholastic site in NY.
No response.
The underworld will turn very cold before this USCF staff goes one step out of their way for a New Yorker.
What email address did you send it to?
When NYSCA let its Gold Membership laspe last year, we got inquiries from them just fine.

I’m not sure exactly how Pat’s e-mail address changed after she married, but her last name is now different.
pknight@uschess.org should still work, though her name is now Pat Knight-Smith, I believe.
I think patsmith@uschess.org will also work.
(To complicate matters, Phil Smith is psmith@uschess.org,)
I’ll re-try. Thanks.
There are times when I think the USCF really needs someone in the position of “Ombudsman”.
I wouldn’t wish that job on anyone, though. (I know someone who had that position in a well known company, the stories I heard! BTW, that person quit the company after about a year in that job.)
Karl,
I vaguely remember something from you about that, but I can not find the
email. If we can find something where the rates would work, we would love to
be there. What are you doing in Texas???

…when I e-mailed about the possibility of proposing sites in NY for the
National Scholastics.
I wonder why…

I forwarded a NY lead to Bill Hall two weeks ago. Never heard a word. The only time I ever heard from him is when I put Texas in the e-mail.
