What is 'real' chess?

Submitted: A ‘real’ game of chess must have a secondary time control.

Can the opponent use a Mon-Roi in a real game of chess, especially if he looks at it?

By that I take it you mean no sudden death? If so, I’m with ya…

ABSOLUTELY no Sudden Death! A player must have enough time to record ALL moves. For example, the new FIDE time control of G/90 with 30 seconds added does not have a secondary time control, but does allow players to record all moves. A 5 second delay is not enough time to record the all moves.

If you play as slowly as I do, every time control is sudden death.

How do you feel about dual-rating?

Steve, if I told you how I REALLY feel about a chess game being rated both as a ‘real’ game of chess and as a ‘quick’ game of chess, it would be blacked out more than a paper from the CIA on the JFK assassination! How 'bout, “It is an abomination!”
These kind of changes promulgated by the ‘pooh-bahs’ only prove that “sometimes progress ain’t!”

Interesting. Unrated games (you know, the ones that we play because we enjoy the game, rather than for points) make up the majority of those that I play. Usually, I do not score these. Are these not real?

Not real. Real is when, no matter how well or how poorly you played, only the 0 or 1 matters. Life or death, usually death.

There’s a gray area where chessplayers can argue if it’s real or not. Unrated games are not in that gray area.

I’d rather play 90 Inc 30 or 120 Inc 30 than a dual time control. I’m all for the longer time controls but think the Increment is a much better and viable option than multiple time controls.

If you get to move 60 in a 90 inc 30, its nearly the same as having played 40/90 g/60 except that you do have more time to play and record moves.

I would agree…

if the control is 1/1m SD/59m.

Its been argued that the Increment time controls are reayl 1/90 1/30secs repeating. (o;

So there is never any SD time controls.

I consider it real chess if it follows the rules of chess… no matter what the speed or lack thereof!

Agreed.

“What is ‘real’ chess?”

For most players it is the games they win (always through skill). While the games they lose are “non-real” chess because they were decided not by skill but by bad luck, illness, tiredness, noise in the tournament room, annoying opponents, …

There are plenty of folks on ICC to whom real chess is 1 0, meaning 60 seconds for the entire game.

Nothing against those who play online, but if you are not sitting across a board with an opponent you can see, it’s not real chess.

The players in the US Chess League will be disappointed to hear that. If he were alive today, so would Bobby Fischer.

I don’t know what y’all are going on about. If the game wasn’t filmed on 16mm it simply wouldn’t qualify…

What

Oh, “Real Chess.” I thought you said, “Reel Chess!”

Nevermind…
:smiling_imp:

Real chess can only be experienced here and now.
