I lived for many years in Stuyvesant Town where he lived. I would see him occasionally in the complex. There is an article in the NY times regarding his eviction from StuyTown in 2016. He could have settled the eviction case at no cost to himself, but walked away from the settlement his legal aid attorney had arranged. It strikes me that he had his issues which were not as severe as those Fischer faced, but which caused functional problems of caring for himself in the end.
The saddest part to me is that he hardly spoke with his son after Lombardy’s wife moved back to the Netherlands with him when he was about ten years old. The last quote from him in the Times article leaves me with the impression that for whatever reason, he had pretty much given up on this life. Sad end.
