It is not clear from the article whether the presented moves were actually played or were reflected on one player’s score sheet (correctly or incorrectly). Nor is it clear what the ruling and game result was and why.
Could anyone at the World Open elaborate? I think the resolution would be instructive, and appreciate any insight provided.
I would certainly hope that the ruling was that, since the two players interpreted the handshake differently, the handshake did not represent a meeting of the minds, and was therefore meaningless, and therefore that the game did not end with the handshake and must continue.
It was clear enough to me that that part was handled correctly.
David Hater commented last night to clarify that upon reconstruction, aided by the cooperation of both players, it was determined that no checkmate occurred. Black resigned when it was determined white could play Kxg2 to avoid mate (the queen was apparently undefended in the final position).
