I watched a program on the History Channel this morning which pointed out that roads, bridges, water and sewer systems, and dams are suffering from deferred maintenance. Tennessee was mentioned, regarding an earthen dam on the Cumberland River. If the dam fails, Nashville will surely be flooded. (Wasn’t there recently great rainfall in Tennessee? This dam could fail if excessive rain causes sinkholes in limestone to migrate up the slope of the dam and breach the top of it.)
Is Crossville in the path of the Cumberland River?
Crossville is on the Cumberland plateau, elevation 1854 feet. The Cumberland river is quite a few miles north of there and much lower in elevation.
The Cumberland river starts in Kentucky, curves down through northern Tennessee towards Nashville, then heads north into Kentucky again, where it empties into the Ohio river. The flooding in Nashville a few weeks ago was largely from the Cumberland river.
If the people who run the government decide to put money into, say, the military, in lieu of infrastructure, we will be able to make war while our country falls apart. It’s the same with an organization like the USCF. When the leaders decided to put all it’s resources into scholastic chess, the other things have fallen by the wayside.
