So, what are the eligibility requirements? There is already a “U.S. Girls Junior Open” scheduled Aug. 4-8, which is open to those born after 7/30/90. Should we infer that the “women’s” event is open to those born before 7/30/90?
Noticed the May issue of CHESS LIFE online has a full page ad for the US Open. Not sure which Cascade Mountain is in the picture in the ad. It could be Mount Hood or Adams or St Helens. Mostly like it is Mount Hood. Hope to see a lot of the forum readers in Vancouver in August.
Had a fellow today tell me that the 113th US Open should really be called the 74th US Open as the ones held before 1939 were not called US Open. Guess the USCF decided some years ago to include the early year events in the US Open lists.
Note there are 67 who have paid their entry fees. Not listed yet but going to play is GM Yasser Seirawan. A group in the PNW is paying his appearance fee and air plane ticket from Amsterdam.
If you would like to donate to this send me a PM.
IM John Donaldson tells me he will play the 4 day schedule of the US Open. Washington State leads the list for number of player who have paid their entry fees last time I looked at the advanced entries.
Don’t know if there was a general name. I don’t have my tournament book handy right now, but Chicago 1937 was known as the Morphy Memorial, and was (IIRC) go-organized by an early rendition of the Illinois Chess Association as well as some Milwaukee organizers. But I can check this later.
Oct 1933 THE CHESS REVIEW magazine page 3 gives the results of the 34th Annual Championship Tournament of the Western Chess Association. Event was held in Detroit and won by Reuben Fine. It was a 14 player round robin event. Appears to me that this is the event we now call the US Open. See THE CHESS HANDBOOK by Kenneth Harkness where he lists the under U.S. Open Championships on page 276 “Since 1900, an open national chess tournament has been held annually in the United States. Up to the year 1938,these tournaments were conducted by the Western Chess Association and its successor the American Chess Federation (1934-1938). Since 1939 they have been held under the auspices of the United States Chess Federation.”
As of June 8 about 5:30pm Pacific Daylight time 99 people had paid their entry fees. Believe the price goes up on June 18. Washington State is way on top for numbers.
I think they opened up another block of rooms at the chess rate because I booked my room last week and got the $110 rate. If anyone knows of a female who would like to share I did get 2 double beds. I’m playing 4 day schedule so I’m arriving 8/8 into PDX. When I was originally looking at flights it was going to be cheaper to fly into SEA. I waited another two weeks. The PDX fare went down by about $100 and the SEA fare went up about $150. I decided to book at that point. $433 from NY.
