Changes in online submission requirements

In addition to the increase in ratings fees that went into effect on December 1st, 2007 (from 18 cents per game for events submitted online to 25 cents per game), two changes have been made to the form that appears when submitting the event online:

  1. We are now asking if the event had a TLA printed in Chess Life. We need this information to compute the point standings in the 2008 Junior Grand Prix.

  2. You will now have to indicate whether the event was a Grand Prix event or not. About half of the Grand Prix events being submitted online have not indicated that the event was a Grand Prix event, which has led to some problems in computing the Grand Prix standings. (You also have to indicate in the section area of the crosstable editing form that the section was a Grand Prix event.)

Until you have answered these two questions, the submit button will be disabled and you will not be able to submit your event for rating.

Mike, are the details of the 2008 Junior Grand Prix published yet?

I think they’re in the December Chess Life, I don’t know if they’ve put them up on the website anywhere yet.

If the answer to question 1 is yes, why does question 2 need to be asked? Couldn’t the software look up the Chess Life TLA information?

If the answer to question 1 is no, then the tournament couldn’t be a Grand Prix event anyway (could it?), so again question 2 should not be necessary.

Just some nerdy nit-picking from someone much lower on the guru scale than Mike Nolan.

The 1st question will be used to track whether an event is eligible for the Junior Grand Prix (any event with a TLA in Chess Life is eligible, as I recall/) In addition to being used to help compute Grand Prix standings, the 2nd question is used at submission time to determine if the ratings fee needs to include a contribution to the PPHBF (enhanced grand prix events.)

If/when we get TLAs interlinked with rating reports, we may be able to discontinue one or both questions, but currently that interlinking is not possible. Part of the challenge there will be that one TLA can result in multiple rated events, thus multiple event IDs. It’s also possible (but probably not as likely) that events from multiple TLAs could be combined into one rating report (with several sections) thus under one event ID.

If the time control is slower than one hour and if it has at least four rounds.
