I am organizing the first ever Chess-Bowling Tournament to be held on Tuesday August 4 in Indianapolis. This will be open to all US Open Chess players and their family members. Cost for the event will be $10 per bowler which will cover the cost of bowling [NOT shoes ($3)] and awards to be given out.
RULES FOR CHESS-BOWLING:
Chess Teams will be formed of 3-6 [Preferable 4-5] player/bowlers.
The team with White will be the Team with the first bowler.
The White player makes a move on the chess board, then does their frame of bowling.
The Black player makes a move in response, then does a frame of bowling.
after completing a frame the White player makes another move, but not prior to the Black move, on the chess board.
The Black player after completing a frame makes another move after the White player has moved.
The next White Bowler now makes a move [i.e. move #3] on the chess board, then bowls a frame. The next Black Bowler responds to the White bowler’s move, then bowls a frame.
After completing the frame and after the Black move, the White player/bowler makes another move.
the Black (team) bowler after completing the frame and after the White move makes another move on the chess board.
Alternation of moves continues until the chess game is over.
There is to be no consultation among members of a team during the chess game. Strategies, Openings, Plans, and other general ideas can be agreed upon before the game starts.
For this event I want to make the chess teams of approximately equal average ratings. So, I can do requests to put player/bowlers on the same team, but probably I can’t guarantee it and I can’t do it for more than 2 people per team. Awards will include choice of a chess book for each member of the top chess team, bowling awards, and a special trophy for the 2009 US Open Chess Bowler. This final award will be determined based on chess team results combined with bowling results, and given out Tuesday night at the US Open chess tournament.
People interested in this event, which I am limiting to 40 participants, will meet Tuesday morning at 10am in the lobby of the site of the US Open chess tournament. I will need 6-7 volunteers to drive to/from the chess site to the bowling alley. The $10 cash payment will be collected at that time. To register for this event, or if you have questions, please e-mail me at carpetbaggerchess@yahoo.com with bowling in the subject line.
So the bowling game lasts more than 10 frames (unless the chess game is a “miniature”)?
There are possibilities for a lot of imaginative rules here. For example, when you capture a piece, you put it in the thumb hole of your opponent’s bowling ball, making it more difficult for him to roll the ball properly.
Yes, so that 80 moves would be made if the bowling finished before the chess game finished! In that case a game would either be adjourned or adjudicated for the US Open chess-bowling tournament.
The question I have is do you hit your clock after you throw the ball, or after the pin sweeper comes down? Wish I could be a part of it, but my flight arrives Wednesday morning.
IMPORTANT: Chess Bowling has now been moved to Friday August 7. Meet in hotel lobby by 10am, as it is about 15 minutes to the bowling alley. The $10 fee covers $6.75 for 3 games of bowling and a contribution of $3.25 to help defray the cost of prizes and the custom made [1 of a kind?!?] Chess-Bowling trophy. Player/Bowlers will need to individual pay [$3] additional if they do not bring bowling shoes.
Please note that I am now limiting the number of participants for this event to 24!
For this particular event there will be no clock on the chess game. You move when your opponent is ready to response or sooner as the case may happen. For example: White moves immediately, then Black can respond immediately or wait until White has finished bowling & is therefore ready to make the next White move.
How would that work? Every pin you knock down gets added to the opponent’s lane, and they to knock down the extra pins? Or every time you throw a strike you give your partner 2 balls that he can throw simultaneously?
