While volunteering to Q&A for the showing of Brooklyn Castle, I discovered the president of the hosting film group had started a Go club at the coffee shop in a local bookstore. Does anyone have any experience at a club where chess and (an)other game(s) are/is played?
I have heard the Paul Morphy Chess Club in New Orleans only has card games now and it was necessary to form the NOCC to play chess at a club. OTOH, turnout for both games sometimes has been very poor and maybe the option to play either game could help both.
I personally think including other games is a mistake. When I was in Junior High someone asked if they could bring a military simulation game and within six weeks it was hard to get a chess game. If I were to allow any other games at a club I ran I would allow only recognizable chess variants such as Chinese Japanese and so on forms, modern variants such as Kreigspiel and Bughouse., etc but not checkers go card games, or other games.
I would think you must be certain there is space for both clubs. Also, there is the question of overlap of members as you don’t want to make people choose between the two clubs. Finally, there is of course the distraction factor. I have no experience with a joint club venture of any kind. I do have experience where some other board game almost took over a local chess club. So be careful and be forewarned.
